Totaalvoetbal fell to their first defeat as a first-half onslaught by Real Madrid left them with too much to do.
Goals from Federico Quintana, Kevin Gabriel (penalty) and Lars-Johan Lagerstrom had put Madrid 3-0 up after 34 minutes and left Totaalvoetbal staring at a heavy defeat.
They would then suffer a shocking offside decision which cost Shirsh Vajpayee a headed goal but Pierre van Diemen did pull one back before the break.
They had more hope after the break as Zlatan Izuhimovic scored his first for the club but, try as they might, they couldn’t complete the comeback.
Robin Meeblind met with press after the game:
‘Well, we had to lose at some point I guess,’ opened the coach.
‘However, it might have been different but for that official. He was useless.
‘Having said that Real started brilliantly and deserved their victory. We cannot afford to start that slowly and expect to take anything from the game.’
He then moved onto Pierre van Diemen who played his 100th game for the club and also notched his 50th goal.
‘If there is a manager in this league who says they don’t want the man, they are a liar.
‘He is legendary and shows no signs of slowing down. May he continue in the famous Orange for seasons to come.
‘I’m just sorry we couldn’t give him the three points so he could properly celebrate the day.’
