Vikings win comes at a cost
The Vikings won a tight game against a defensive Villarreal but it came at the cost of a serious injury to the main striker.
The first half was a quiet affair as the Vikings probed but could not find a way through the stubborn Villarreal defence. The only point of note in the first half was an injury to Villarreal star midfielder Sid Peyton.
The second half was a more lively affair. Strachan came close to breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute when his delightful lob hit the junction of the goal. Villarreal then actually dared to come out of their own half and this resulted in a goal as the Vikings defence and keeper had been having a nap for most of the game. Marinicic slotted a quick ball through to Beddoe who chipped over the prone keeper in 59 minutes. The good news is that this woke the Vikings up and they came roaring back into the game. Gourmas came close in 68 minutes just missing the goal after megging the keeper. He did however get the equaliser a minute later when the ball was bouncing around the penalty area and he showed great awareness to score with a deft backheel. Bonavia then hit a post on 74 minutes before being stretchered off with a serious looking injury a minute later. The winner came in spectacular fashion in the 84th minute. Tassiopoulos sent over a corner and defender Jukka seemed to have mis timed his run for the header, he quickly re-adjusted and scored with spectacular bicycle kick. this was the last act of the game and it ended 2-1
Eaglesrjh was happy with the win but down about the injury and the negative tactics by the opponent. "I'm happy to get the 3 points but do wonder if teams are now going to come here and throw up the barracades, 5-4-1 very defensive is hard to break down but we got there in the end. The injury to Bonavia is a bad one but I feel we have adequate cover and can still perform without him"
