Chester United gave Jimbob reason to be excited about his club’s future with a 2-0 home victory over Morley Town F.C. Chester might have taken an early lead but both Kyle Lang’s volley and Sonny Baron’s precise header narrowly missed. There was a little period of quiet before Niko Tervola’s side-footed shot flew over and Morley also had their first chance with Josh Phelps chipping over the bar. Chester were unlucky with their next effort as Baron again rose highest but his header came back off the bar however Morley couldn’t capitalise as Raberg saved a header from Vivian Kewkeu. Benos Hardinho would be the next to try his luck but failed with two efforts just before half-time and the sides would go in scoreless. Chester did sharpen up after the interval with Duncan Graeme showing great initiative to back-heel the ball past Gaughan for the opening goal. Morley responded to this setback with a Daniel Sa Pinto effort which hit a post and a Zacharias Ashe header which flew over the bar. The home side would take full advantage of Morley’s profligacy to double their lead with a Hardinho volley and Josh Phelps completed the visitor’s frustration by lobbing over in injury-time. Jimbob has his new side within two points of the top three and if he can keep them in this form they might be looking for instant success under the new manager. Leeg21’s side continue to be inconsistent and until they can fix this a season of mid-table mediocrity awaits.
Carthage comfortably disposed of wortley afc to maintain their advantage at the head of the table. Once they survived an early chance for Ray Cooper, Carthage never looked back and took a tenth minute lead as Rhys Gregson hit the target from a tight angle. The home side did their best to level the game but Brandon Hiller couldn’t take advantage of a couple of chances and Carthage would nearly make them pay with an Ad Herbal effort which struck wood. A Svante Jillhed volley from their first chance of the second-half did give them a 2-0 lead, though, on 64 minutes and the game was over as a contest nine minutes later. After the award of a penalty, Herbal slotted home to put Carthage 3-0 up and in cruise control. Amin Mansourian did go close with a brilliant bicycle kick and Gregson wasted a late headed opportunity but Carthage were still able to run out comfortable winners. Blakey will be feeling more confident with every passing game and with his side now six points clear of fourth they can play with some freedom. Thegreatlordbags is plagued with the same sort of inconsistency as Leeg21 but will know that his side are more than capable if they can play to their potential.
The Champs kept in touch with Carthage as they held off a spirited Arsenal challenge to record a 2-1 victory. They had to come from behind to do so, though, as Arsenal scored an excellent opener through Eurico Constantina who finished a breakaway move. Indeed, Arsenal might have added to their advantage but Irving saved from Shmal Sarzil and The Champs struck back. From their first chance Daley Higson drove in a powerful long range shot to level matters. Arsenal could count themselves unlucky not to take a lead into half-time as Lars Helgesson’s chip was only denied by the bar. Jeff Speakman fired an early warning that the second-half would see more from the home side but Arsenal also maintained a threat. Adriano Amorim couldn’t quite direct his shot well enough and Ivo Daniel suffered the same fate as the visitors wasted their chance to take hold of the game. The Champs would suffer their own trouble with the bar on 75 minutes as Bruce Collinge put in a brilliant lob while Humberto Sobrinho couldn’t get his to come down quickly enough at the other end. The vital moment would come on 85 minutes as Collinge defied a horrid angle to fire past Burchell and this would be enough despite Burt Chenery wasting a late chance to extend their lead. Wylie can be satisfied with how his side are progressing and at the moment you’d be a brave man to back against them or Carthage for the title. DomBrown can be proud of his side’s performance and with a bit of luck they might have taken something out of the game against one of the better sides in the division.
Dream Team and Glory Hornets picked up a point each in a tight game at the Stadium of Dreams. The home side would waste an early chance as Wade Ellison got his shot all wrong and missed the target by some distance. The Hornets would be more impressive in front of goal as Paolo Ballotta forced Williamson into a save before Rinaldo Lupatelli would miss the target at the other end with a header. The opening goal came on 22 minutes as Toma Popadic showed a cool head in placing his shot beyond the ‘keeper and into the net. The second-half would be as keenly fought as the first but the hosts would force Rosbotham into some work for the first time in the game as a free-kick from Dudley Barrowcliff needed tipping over. The hosts got the slice of luck they needed to draw level in the dying minutes. Kenneth Caster was fed through nicely by Milorad Gavrancic but mishit his shot badly only to watch it deceive Rosbotham to make it 1-1. The Hornets saw Alex McQuillan miss a late header and had to settle for a point when it looked like they might have had all three. GregPerkins proclaimed himself still ‘pleased with the result’ despite the late equaliser and hopes to continue their progress in the coming weeks. MrJames will be happy with his side’s fighting spirit to claim the point which kept them in the top three but admitted that they still aren’t ‘performing as (they) should’ ahead of a game against the Warriors.
Wiltshire prepared for that particular game with a solid 4-2 home win over Alsancak. Chances would come at both ends during an open contest with Craig Elliott missing the first for the hosts with a weak header. Both sides had early free-kick opportunities with Bob Lake forcing Cirkovic into fine work in goal while Andrew Taylor hit his over the bar at the other end. Elliott was denied a goal from another headed chance while John Burston horribly miscued as the game continued to ebb and flow. Inevitably, the opening goal would arrive and it would be Wesley Bird who would produce a powerful header to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The lead was quickly doubled as Ray Billinger delivered an excellent chip to leave Cirkovic with no chance and the Warriors with a 2-0 half-time lead. A Bob Black header swiftly made it 3-0 after the restart and only Cirkovic stood in the way of 4-0 as he denied Dante de Matteo. 4-0 did eventually arrive as Bird produced another outstanding header to lob Cirkovic. Alsancak would show some spirit in an excellent finish to the game and got some reward with Andrew Taylor lashing in a free-kick before setting up Rory Burston for a half-volley from another set-piece move to make the end score 4-2. Big K now takes his side into that crunch clash with DT in fourth spot and they look to have clicked into gear after an indifferent start to the season. Wienersnitzel will be enjoying the spirit with which his side are playing and will hope for more tangible reward in the seasons to come.
Grey Area picked up three valuable points in a 1-0 triumph at Spartans as they continue their improvement under Trecool. The goal came early in the piece as Diego Maradona took advantage of some slack home defending to power a header past Neuer and into the goal. Spartans would see Wesley Sneijder crash an effort into a post as they struggled to get back into the contest. The second-half would be just as tight and again it would be Maradona who would cause the home defence the most distress. However, this time his efforts lacked the necessary power and Neuer was on hand to make two comfortable saves. Spartans were to have further misfortune when they had their effort of the half; Sergio Aguero curling a powerful shot onto the bar as Area recorded the three points. Trecool now appears to have his side upwardly mobile and if they can continue to progress he might be eyeing a promotion spot in his first season in charge. Tomsayshii will need to keep a closer eye on things if he is to move his Spartans side from the foot of the table but he has the necessary skills to do so.
