Arsenal UK were the impressive performers in Division Three as they defeated wortley afc 4-0 at The Emirates. They would get off to the perfect start with a first minute penalty being tucked away confidently by Robin van Persie. Sid Peyton narrowly failed making it two with a lob which went over before van Persie also failed with a power shot as Arsenal kept up a hot pace. The second goal wouldn’t be long in coming as Andrey Arshavin curled in a free-kick on 15 minutes. Peyton’s precise header made it 3-0 as Arsenal looked unstoppable and it was soon to be 4-0 with a lob from distance by van Persie. Peyton hit a lob of his own high over the bar while Samir Nasri couldn’t direct a header well enough as Arsenal finished a one-sided half well on top. The second-half saw wortley compete much better although van Persie might have made it five but for hitting an effort straight at Gareth. The visitors had their first sight of goal on 85 minutes but Walter Willock’s free-kick was disappointing and they ended the game a distinct second best. Arsenal News hailed the turnaround in a team which was a ‘write off’ before the new man came in and now a ‘push for the league title’ is on as they sit just five points behind. Thegreatlordbags will have seen this as a big disappointment as they let their opponents open up a six point gap over them with games running out.
Carthage allowed Arsenal to close a little as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Chester United. The home side signalled their intentions as Andres Iniesta had an early header saved by Aurelius. Despite this it looked like Carthage would take the lead as Eric Fray side-footed home, however the assistant referee’s flag denied him with a doubtful offside decision. Carthage’s luck would get worse before it would improve as Paul Glimsjo put through his own goal on 23 minutes to give Chester the lead. However, the lead wouldn’t last long as Carthage won a penalty and Ad Herbal levelled proceedings. The hosts tried to regain the initiative as Sonny Baron got a header in on goal but Aurelius was alert enough to make the save and the game remained level at the break. Carthage would start the second-half stronger but Amin Mansourian couldn’t keep his shot down. They would take the lead, though, as Herbal struck once more with a clinical header from a corner. Baron would go close to equalising but his header struck a post before Mansourian missed a chance to seal victory by firing wide for Carthage. They would ultimately pay for this as Alan Shearer headed home in injury-time to ensure both sides would go home with a point each. Blakey will be disappointed with his side’s inability to see the game out but will be reassured by the four point lead they have at the top of the table. Jimbob will be lifted by the performance against the leaders and it will bode well for a much brighter future.
Dream Team couldn’t fully capitalise on the leaders slip as they were held 1-1 at Wiltshire. Dream Team would start well in their quest to close the gap on Carthage as Gianmarco Siligardi side-footed in on seven minutes to stun the home crowd. The Warriors would play a full part in proceedings, though, and were quickly level as Bob Lake fired into the net from a free-kick. Both sides would have chances before the break but Siligardi horribly mishit his shot when well-placed for DT while Craig Elliott’s driving shot at the other end went well over the bar. Wiltshire were the stronger side in the second-half but Bob Black’s header was saved by Williamson as the game remained tied. The Warriors would have one final chance in injury-time but Mike Warner was denied by some brave ‘keeping and the game would end in stalemate. Warriors News claimed that the visitors were ‘lucky to come away with a point at all’ but were happy with their manager’s ‘excellent tactical’ moves. MrJames simply said ‘woops’ after the game but consoled himself that Carthage had failed to win and the gap remains four points between the sides.
The Champs were grateful to see Wylie return to the managerial fold and celebrated with a 2-0 home win over Alsancak F.C. The first-half was a slow burner but Fraizer Campbell might have headed in on 35 minutes to give the visitors a shock lead. It would be The Champs, though, who would take the initiative as Said Qahbadaik headed home precisely on 45 minutes to boost the home fans before the break. Campbell would again waste a chance for the visitors as his curled shot failed to trouble Irving and The Champs would turn up the heat for the rest of the game. Andrew Taylor would make their task easier by getting sent-off and Qahbadaik nearly made it two as his header hit the bar. Bruce Collinge would eventually double the lead, though, as his long range shot beat Cirkovic to signal a return to winning ways. They have now moved to within five points of Carthage and with Wylie back at the helm anything is possible. Alsancak, meanwhile, can tick off another game on the road to their long-term goal of team development.
Grey Area produced a stunning comeback to leave the Glory Hornets pointless at Doon The Park. Elliott Malloy lobbed in for the visitors on 10 minutes and he should have made it two but hit a horrid penalty to keep the score at 1-0. The Hornets would find the net again soon but Toma Popadic’s effort was clearly offside. The second goal eventually arrived, though, as Popadic met a Ballotta cross with a superb diving header to give the Hornets a 2-0 half-time advantage. The second-half would be a completely different contest as Garth Rossall fired an early warning with a volley which needed saving by Rosbotham. A precise header by Dirk Slatter did reduce the deficit to one however and they were unlucky not to equalise when Alasdair Rioch headed against a post on 69 minutes. It would only be three minutes later that they would equalise, though, as Diego Maradona toe-poked home and this set the stage for a late Area winner. Rioch would finally get the goal his play merited with an excellent strike from distance and Kerrigan protected the lead by tapping over a lob by Willy Windsor with time running out. Trecool keeps his side progressing in his first season in charge while GregPerkins said that he could not ‘believe (they) came out of that without any points’ and will be keen for a quick improvement on Friday.
In the days other game Morley Town were frustrated by the Spartans in a 0-0 draw at Scatcherd Park. The first-half would be a relatively quiet affair as only a diving header by Vivian Kwekeu caused any excitement although it was easily saved by Neuer. The second-half would improve slightly with Zacharias Ashe hitting the post with a precise header just four minutes in. Wesley Sneijder had Spartans’ only effort of the day but he couldn’t direct his shot on target and Morley would miss their last chance as Ashe ballooned a header over the bar. Tomsayshii will be the happier of the managers following the game as his side look to give their fans hope for the season’s ahead. Leeg21 will expect more goals from his side in the weeks to come if they are to force their way into the shake-up at the season’s end.
