Ocs18 remembers being told by more than one friend, "when you're up, for Christ's sake enjoy it because the down will come soon enough". I detect he didn't enjoy it as much as he would have liked. When he was at Wycombe, his team were top of the Division. 'This surely was an achievement,' he says. 'The first time for many years. But I still had fans saying, "Nah - not good enough." We were only top for two weeks, but it doesn't matter. Some people weren't happy with being top, they wanted to win every match four-nil, an absolute impossibility.'
Ocs18 speaks warmly of the passionate supporters at Wycombe and Tottenham, but he is wary of their influence. He is fond of the notion that whichever player he doesn't leave out of a team instantly becomes the best player the fans have ever seen. 'The sad side of football is... I have a bank manager, a solicitor, an agent, and I would never ever dream that I could do their job better than them. Football is probably the only job where wholly unqualified people think they know everything. I got a letter from somebody who said he could train the team better than me. I very nearly said, "Go on then, come and take the training," but I know for a fact that the players would have killed him. They would have had such a go at him, and in the end it would have reflected badly on me. So you have to rise above it all.'
Since then the Tottenham boss finally got the win he was searching for against Reggae Reggae Sauce with the team averaging an age of 21 years, the fans and player must be pretty chuffed with themselves.
“I don’t care if it was 4-0, 1-0 or 8-0, a win is a win,” said ocs18. “It’s been a hard slog up till now, I know we wrote off this season but it’s hard for everyone when you’re not picking up ANY points. I’ve had a hard induction into the club and even with the fans but I hope they understand what I’m trying to achieve.”
“I’m looking forward to see what the journalist RobinMeeblind writes about us, normally it’s doom and gloom and how I must be tempted to hang myself etc etc! “if we can nick a few more 1-0 wins this season then that would be great otherwise I just want the lads to enjoy themselves, keep fit and play to the best of their ability.”
