‘At first I was afraid…I was petrified..’
The popular Gloria Gaynor song was played loudly in the away changeroom of Metelo Park, with Santos players belting out the words, using shampoo for microphones. Upon first glance, one would reckon this was an attempt at a 'bonding moment', inspired by RMB's school of tactics. Alas, the theme of survival was used as, Santos escaped relegation with a 3-0 defeat of giants Totaalvoetbal. Alshammar and Mitchell both (finally) got on the score-sheet and the defence held the Oranje offensive machine to no chances.
The last few seasons have been treacherous for Santos faithful, amidst under-performing stars, poor footballing philosophies, threatening Christmas wishlists, pop diva scandals, early retirements, and above all, one crazy manager. Rest assured, Santos FC have survived...for now.
The task at hand for manager Sean7 is to examine what went wrong this season. Having high-form for most of the season, as well as a contending team, questions will be asked about tactics..and guess who that falls under? ahem.
'I will admit, my tactics this season were spotty at best' confessed the gaffer.
'Cautious approaches turned us into the Underdogz United of season 6, and we were really nervous into the final stretch of the season. Thankfully, with some water, suds and a little love, we became firm.'
Firm?
'Firm.' re-iterated Sean7. 'Our defence held firm in battling Totaal, and Correa didn't get booked! Happy days.'
'You know what I'm most happy about? The team let me into the changeroom this time! I guess they were really happy we won and allowed me to sing with them. It was bliss.'
The reporter noticed a developing bruise on the right side of the manager's head, a slightly crazed look in his eyes.
'Oh, this? well erm, I got a bit carried away when we were singing...I stood up on the bench when the song was on, gyrated a little too much to the left and slipped. No worries though. There's nothing in here anyway.' pointing to his head.
Some level-headedness will be needed for the final game of the season, and hopefully Santos can run out, stay...firm...and end the season on a high.
