Charlottenburg FC gave their promotion hopes a shot in the arm with a tough 1-0 success at Belly Tubbies. It was a tough match with no quarter given or asked for and chances few and far between. The goal which settled the game came relatively early as Stan Collymore scored his sixth goal of the season from distance. With Charlottenburg’s ‘keeper also in top form the goal was always likely to prove a match-winner. Belly Tubbies’ cause wasn’t helped with injuries of differing severity to Gert-Ake Sahlberg and Dave Whittingham. Collymore took some of the gloss off his own performance by getting himself needlessly sent-off late in the game but his goal proved enough for the three points. Potsdamerplatz gave some of the credit to ‘The Izuka Doctrine’ before adding the win was ‘unexpected.’ Unexpected maybe, but sweet nevertheless as Charlottenburg move up to third in the table. Belly Tubbies drop into the relegation zone but only three points separate them from mid-table.
The biggest winners of the day in the division were Carthage FC who put in an impressive performance in defeating Kensington Boys Club 3-1 at Kensington Grounds. The home side edged affairs in the first-half but couldn’t put it together in the final third to take the lead. Carthage managed a couple of chances of their own but were only to put their shooting boots on for the second-half. In truth, they were the dominant side in the second-half and as soon as Marcus Spillane had headed them in front you sensed their confidence rise. Guido Eliseo went on to add a second after a corner and when Amin Mansourian hit home from distance it was 3-0 and game over. KBC did pull one back through Aubrey de Vere but it proved nothing more than a consolation. KBC news bemoaned the ‘boys lack of concentration in the second half’ as they fall to second place in the table. Carthage move out of the relegation zone with the win and will want to build on such an impressive performance.
Real Madrid FC couldn’t take full advantage of Kensington’s slip-up but did take a point away to Southampton which saw them move back to the top of the table. Southampton put in a spirited display which was no doubt buoyed by an early goal from Stathis Havos. When Aren Garabedian went off, forcing a reshuffle in the visitors’ midfield, it looked like being a tough afternoon for Madrid. To their credit they coped immediately and were back level on 12 minutes with Kevin Gabriele netting smartly after a corner. Despite both sides creating chances neither could find a clinical edge to their game and they both had to settle for a point each. While Madrid return to the top and are one point clear, Southampton remain at the foot of the table but are showing enough encouraging signs to suggest they will be a force if they could just find a win in the next couple of games.
Another impressive win saw Internazionale get the better of Kroklund Kings 2-1 at the San Siro. Kroklund never really found their rhythm in the game and were under pressure from the start. Being unable to force a chance Kroklund had to settle for trying to be defensively sound but this hope was undone as Bert Keith headed in on 42 minutes to give the home side a slender lead. The lead was doubled on 57 minutes as Stephen Lorimer shot home in the penalty area and with more chances coming you sensed the three points were secure. KK did manage to score with their one effort on goal in the entire game as Toini Vasama knocked in a penalty but it didn’t threaten to be enough to launch a comeback. Jamesmclaughlin described himself as ‘well chuffed’ after the victory which sees his side move into seventh and only four points from Madrid in first. Kroklund slip out of the promotion places following the defeat but bossebong will be encouraged by his teams’ opening half of the season.
Morley Town and Los Samgeles Kings fought out a 1-1 draw but LSK will be wondering how they didn’t force a win after dominating the second-half. Morley took an early lead through Florian Arnautu’s long range strike but that was about as good as the afternoon would get for the Yorkshire outfit. Los Samgeles grew into the contest and forced Morley back during a high-octane second-half. Chances came and went with only one being taken; Torben Kummel was the scorer with a fine header from a Dustin Brown cross. With both sides taking a point it’s as you were for the clubs in the middle of the table and each will be hopeful of pushing the leading sides in the business half of the season.
White Hawk FC’s troublesome run continued as they were held 0-0 by Rothion’s AJ Rovers. The game was short on quality and chances with the lack of confidence showing in the home team’s play while the need for points was very apparent in the away sides. Clarence Ong A Fat and Chad Atlee excelled in the respective defensive performances with both teams hoping for a more attacking-minded performance next time out. AJ find themselves on nine points and looking for a way out of the relegation zone while White Hawk have been slowly slipping down the table and find themselves in eighth on 12 points.
