PSV Eindhoven 3 - 3 The Vikings

Viking Land News

Vikings slip from 3rd in entertaining draw.

The Viikings slipped out of the promotion places after an entertaining draw in possibly the most exciting game of the day.The Vikings seem to be having an injury prone season and in the 4th minute Irwin felt a twinge and came off to be replaced by Leo Idle. Voronin then took advantage of the defensive reshuffle as he found space and curled a long range effort into the goal on 7 minutes. Recalled striker Clint Bonavia then hit a post for the Vikings on 10 minutes with a good header. Bonavia was then forced off with a slight injury after a brutal tackle by Dalgish that earned the midfielder a yellow card. Last games hero Justin Portway came off the bench to replace Bonavia. Fonte then sent a 16th minute freekick over the bar as Eindhoven continued to press. The game was very back and forth and Crouch had the next chance heading over from 10 yard on 21. Dalglish then must have regretted his tackle on Bonavia as the replacement Portway raced clear of the Eindhoven defence onto a Gourmas through ball and calmly chipped the advancing keeper to level the game on 29. Eindhoven then also had to make a change as Babel limped off and Nanmeng came on. Voronin then unleashed another shot on 35 but Lees handled the ball well. McNally then headed over on 37 for Eindhoven. Dalglish then hit the corssbar on 40 minutes as Eindhoven may have felt they had done enough to deserve to be ahead at the break. Strachan did have a header saved on 44 as the Vikings reminded Eindhoven they had come to play too. 1-1 half time.

Eindhoven retook the lead on 54 minutes as Fonte found McNally in space and he shot home from range. The Vikings are a detirmined bunch though and again Portway levelled the game as he again ran onto a throughball from Veziridis and slotted past Reina. The Vikings kept coming and Papakostas volleyed just wide on 62. Portway was once again showing other forwards how to play the game and forced Reina into a good save on 76 from his diving header. Dalglish then clipped the outside of a post for Eindhoven as they looked to retake the lead on 78. Eindhoven were then caught with too many players upfield on 79 and once again a clinical breakaway saw Portway latch onto a ball from Strachan and nutmegged the keeper to put the Vikings ahead and seal a second succesive hat-trick. Just when the Vikings felt they had nicked the game Eindhoven were awarded a 84th minute penalty that was converted by Agger. Neither side could then create another chance and the game finished 3-3.

After the game Eaglesrjh said "Well what a game that was! They played more offensively than we expected so the game was always going to have chances, but 3-3 wow! In some ways i'm relieved to get a point after being behind twice in the game but to be pegged back by the 6th penalty given against us this year is pretty sickening! As for Portway, what can I say about the lad, 1 hat-trick is special but successive hat-tricks, one coming off the bench has to be classed as exceptional. Whats more given the situation with match experience for other strikers I cant even guarantee him a spot in the 16 for the next game!"
