The Vikings 3 - 1 Goals Aloud

Viking Land News

Vikings move into 3rd!

The Vikings moved into third with a comfortable win at home to Goals Aloud. With a hat-trick for young striker Justin Portway.

Goals Alound started the game in positive fashion and Digby forced Lees into a save on 8 minutes. However it was the Vikings who took the lead as a quick passing move found Strachan passing to Portway who finished with a classy lob over the Goals Aloud keeper. Milic then limped off on 27 with Leo Idle coming on in his place. Goals Aloud were awarded a freekick on 29, the ball was laid off to Kinsella but he shot straight at the keeper. Colin Crouch then came close for the Vikings on 32 as his lob was punched away by Harper. From the resulting corner the returning Tassiopoulos sent over a wicked corner and young striker Portway was on hand to head home and make it 2-0. Goals Aloud were not out of the game though and Bhagirath may feel he should have done better with his 35th minute effort which went well wide. 2-0 half time, with Portway showing some of the more experienced players where the net is!

Into the second half and again the Vikings were glad to have a good strong squad as Strachan was forced off with a knock and Ahlm came on. Portway then sealed the win and his hat-trick when Ahlm played a through ball and Portway showed great composure to round Harper and slot the ball into the empty net. The Vikings were then perhaps guilty of over confidence and Goals Aloud crept back into the game, Fazackerley had a shot saved on 70 minutes. Portway then tried to add a fourth but missed with his long range piledriver. Goals Aloud pulled one back when Bhagirasth turned the ball home from Nybergs corner. Fazackerley then saw Lees do really well to turn his 79th minute effort round the post as Goals Aloud refused to lie down. This was to be their last chance as the Vikings comfortably saw out the rest of the game.

Manager Eaglesrjh was still in cautious mood about promotion but excited about his young players. "Well it was a comfortable win today" he said "I had noticed their manager had not been online for a while and therefore took a risk and played a younger team than normal. I'm pleased with the win and other results see us move into third but I'm still not overly thinking about promotion, we have some tough games coming up and we will just have to see how things go. As for the young players they are all coming on well and I'm especially pleased to see Portway playing well again after his earlier injury this season."
