West Brom Strollers extended their lead at the top of Division 1 to 6 points after a narrow victory over Newry City.
The first half was a tight affair, West Brom looked lacklustre and slightly jaded after their recent set of fixtures. Neither side were able to take the game to their opponents. Graham Williams was stretched off just before hakf time, but the injury didnt seem to serious.
West Brom came out looking more purposeful in the second half but were lucky not to go a goal down, Scott Carson was caught napping but the crossbar saved his blushes. It was the wake up call Strollers needed and then proceeded to spend most of the second half camped in the Newry City half. The breakthrough came in the 66th minute from a free kick, Bryan Robson rolled the ball to Bobby Taylor who rifled the ball into the net from fully 30 yards. Strollers continued to probe and were rewarded for their efforts in the 79th minute, Cyrille Regis drilled a corner low to the near post for Boby Tayor to send a diving header past the keeper. Taylor had a chance to complete his hat trick late on but curled his shot into the arms of the Newry keeper.
West Brom keep the points ticking over and results elsewhere mean they extend their lead over 2nd placed Manchester United to 6 points. More importantly the gap to 4th is now 12 points and could theoretically seal promotion in the next 2 weeks.
Strollers Manager Dinkydave spoke to the press after the match "i'm pleased with the result today, we've had some very physically and mentally tiring matches the last few weeks and i think that showed today. We can rest up now and look forward to a trip to Juventus"
