Vikings start new season with a win.
The Vikings got the season off to the best possible start with a convincing home win against Juventus. The manager has already warned the fans to hope for nothing more than mid table after being promoted last season but hopes will be raised of doing better than this if this level of performance continues.
The Vikings followers did not have to wait long for theiteams first goal of the new season. A freekick was given on the edge of the area and Almandis stepped up and with confidence delightfully lifted the ball up and over the wall and curling into the back of the net. The perfect start for the Vikings. This good feeling faded slightly when the first injury of the season happened after only 7 minutes, Liordis limping off to be replaced by Veziridis. The defensive reorganisation had not quite settled when Blanquet found space in the box for Juves' first effort but thankfully Vincent Lees was able to tap the ball over the bar. The next effort came for the Vikings but Toursoundis goal bound header on 24 was saved by the keeper. It soon became clear that this had just been a range finder as just 2 minutes later Toursoundis powered in a header after substitute Veziridis had floated in a lovely ball. Almandis then thought he had scored another on 27 as the Vikings took control but his wonderful freekick smacked the post with the keeper well beaten. Juve then got a freekick of their own on 35 but Foley hit his effort to close to Lees in the Viking goal. Foley got a second attempt just 2 minutes later and this time the freekick evaded Lees and Juventus were back in the game. 2-1 at half time with the Vikings having slightly more possession and chances.
The Vikings came out for the second half looking to kill off the game, new signing Crouch put a delicate chip just over the bar on 50. Juve seemed to be only troubling from set plays and another freekick on 67 had to be watched carefully by Lees. The Vikings wrapped up the points on 81 when Toursoundis hammered a long range shot into the roof of the net after being played into position by Almandis. This was enough for the Vikings who then sat back and gave away no more feekicks and Juve had never looked like creating from open play. 3-1 the gme finished with a comfotable enough win and a happy manager.
"We played well, I'm happy to get the season off to a winning start but know it will be tough this year after promotion and we are still realistically just looking to cement our place in this division, this is our main aim and if we happen to be in a better position nearer the end of the season then who knows what can happen! Avoiding the relegation battle is our primary concern though." said a delighted Eaglesrjh
