Viking Land News
Huge win keeps promotion race wide open.
The Vikings finished their away campaign with a big win against top of the table Kirkbride Strollers.
The vikings won the first chance from a freekick as both teams looked to take advantage of a weak ref by using some dubious tactics. Papakostas held his nerve early in the game to be bang on target with his first freekick chance and bent a superb freekick over the Kirkbride wall to give the Vikings the lead on 5 minutes. Papakostas seemed to b e handling the pressure of the big game well and forced the Kirkbride keeper into a save from a header on 7mins. There were then worrying scenes for vikings fans as midfield maestro Anastasios Tassiopoulos was taken off in the 9th minute with an injury, the good news is that the injury was minor and he should be available for the next game. Papakostas was then just off target with another freekick on 20mins. Kirkbride then got their first opportunity from a freekick but Symingtons freekick was easily dealt with by Vincent Lees in the Vikings goal. Kirkbride then had another freekick on 28 but symington shot over. 40 minutes gone and substitute Maladenis forced an excellent save form the Kirkbride keeper. 0-1 half time
Kirkbride had obviously had a message from their manager at half time and came out and got the first chance of the second half. Lees guiding Wilsons powerful header round the post. Proctor then shot over from the resulting corner. The vikings were then awarded another freekick on 58. Papakostas this time laid the ball off to Strachan who cracked his shot off the right upright! The Vikings then seemed to be trying to play out the game and were exposed on a breakaway but thankfully Symington chipped over on 75. Ahlm then tried a cheeky backheel on 76 but the Kirkbride keeper was awake to deal with it. The Vikings then saw out the rest of the game with no alarms. 0-1 full time
With Manchester and Liverpool both winning as well it makes the last 3 games of the season very interesting as any of the 4 teams could win the league and still any of the 4 could have the heartbreak of missing out on promotion. Vikings manager Richard Humphries promised to have his sides full attention on the game against an improving pahang side this week but could be forgiven for keeping half an eye on the match between Manchester and Liverpool which could have a big say on who gets promoted this year.
