The Vikings 3 - 1 Pahang United

Viking Land News

Party can begin as home win sees the Vikings promoted!

The Vikings went into the game knowing that as long as they did not lose by more than 2 they would be promoted. However the manager does not set up to lose games and the plan was always to try to win the game and take any goal difference issues out of the equation.

There was an air of tense expectation as the teams lined up. Nerves looked like playing their part in the first few minutes as no one got hold of the ball and the game took a twist as Pahang were forced into an early defensive change. however any Vikings nerves were soon settled when Lind took a run out wide, cut back inside and sent over a cross that Tassiopoulos flick headered into the net. 9 minutes gone and the Vikings could looked to secure promotion in style. These were the only chances of the first half as the Vikings played keep ball with 64% possession. 1-0 half time and nearly job done!

The second half began with the Vikings having to defend for a good while as Pahang dominated possession. Defending was done well and it was actually the Vikings who got thhe halfs first chance as Almandis out a 58th minute freekick just wide. Pahang then had a freekick of their own but Strongbow made it easy for Raasch. Pahang did make their possession count though as Strongbow lashed home a powerful effort from range to level the game on 64 minutes. The Vikings then went back to playing on the break as the draw would have been good enough and it was important not to concede any more. One of these breakaways paid dividends in the 78th minute as Ahlm split the defence with a pass that saw Tassiopoulos beat the defenders and nutmeg the keeper to give the Vikings the lead once again. The game and promotion was then made safe by top scorer Papakostas as he got his head onto an 81st minute Ahlm cross and saw the ball sail into the net. This sent the Vikings fans into raptures and the fans sang many songs about the players and the manager. The game was not over though and Almandis saw a 83rd minute freekick easily saved. The game finished in the 93rd minute and promotion was achieved!

As you would expect the home crowd went wild and much cheering and celebrating was had as the manager led the team for a lap round the ground to applaud the fans who have been such a driving force in promotion. Credit must also be paid to the Pahang travelling support who stayed and applauded the Vikings in a very sporting manner.

We caught up with manager Eaglesrjh during the celebrations. "It was a great game and a great day for the club, we are delighted to achieve promotion and will look forward to playing top division football for the first time"

"Credit goes to all the players and the fans (just listen to them) for a great season and as a team we hope we can live up to the fans hopes for next season. I also want to say thanks to TrueBlue for a great game and his kind words at the end, he is a great manager and i'm sure his team will be in the mix next season. I must also congratulate Kirkbride on their title and Manchester on their promotion. We look forward to playing you both next season."

"We can now look forward to next season. we should have a decent update and money is available if we wish to use it so we should be in a good position to tackle the RMI next season."

"I'm now off to celebrate with my team and fans, thank you very much!"
