Totaalvoetbal began the new season in solid if unspectacular form with a 1-0 win over Hun Haters.
With just one new signing in the off-season in the shape of Rex Rimmer, continuity was the watchword at the MVB Arena.
Indeed, it would be the legendary Horacio Metelo who would be the key figure in the opening exchanges. Firstly, he would threaten with a free-kick which went just over before going closer with a powerful header just before half-time.
The rest of the half was a turgid affair with Totaal enjoying much of the possession without really threatening an end product. Hun Haters, for their part, competed well and were to pick up a couple of bookings as they looked to get an edge on their counterparts.
The second-half would start with a bang as Haters, for a brief moment, thought they had taken the lead. A corner, taken by Ashton Crosby, eventually found its way to Alexandr Prohazska who swept the ball home. He was, however, some yards offside and the goal was correctly wiped off.
Seemingly buoyed by this, though, Hun saw Iain Emery lob the ball over Rimmer but also over the bar as they looked to add an attacking threat to their game.
However, despite this new found confidence going forward they were to be caught at the other end. Metelo, once more, pulled the strings in the midfield area and found a pinpoint pass for Shirsh Vajpayee to run onto and beat Boruc with a delicious finish.
While Hun did try and respond with a Craig Elliston free-kick which brushed the outside of the post you sensed their belief had died a little with the goal.
Edwin Hayter looped a header over and Metelo forced Boruc into excellence as Totaal finished the game on the front foot.
The final whistle was met with a loud roar from the home fans who will be expecting good things from their side this term.
“We have started as we needed to,” opened Meeblind.
“It wasn’t a classic as I’m sure Chris will agree. However, we have to be content as this division looks like throwing up tough match after tough match. A real minefield.”
