Diemen Finish Hurts Amateurs

Totaalvoetbal edged Yorkshires Amateurs 2-1 in a game which proved as tight as all those that had gone before it.

It had looked like Totaal might enjoy a comfortable day early on as Horacio Metelo forced Vadge into a fine save before they took a 15th minute lead. Pierre van Diemen would be the scorer as he showed his clinical side by finishing well in the area.

The Amateurs emerged as an attacking forced on 35 minutes but Armand Gomah got his shot wrong and it flew off target.

While the remainder of the first-half would fizzle out somewhat the second more than made up for it.

Totaal looked to strike a second goal but Metelo’s free-kick was easily gathered by Vadge and the game then saw a defining moment. Raymond Putnam put in an agricultural challenge on the unsuspecting Vince Brightwell and as the Amateurs defender writhed in agony, Putnam received his marching orders. Brightwell, also, would play no further part in proceedings as he was stretchered off.

Gomah was denied by Rimmer as the Amateurs looked to seize upon the uncertainty surrounding the visitors. Abraham Alejo would do this in fine style by producing a stunning diving header from a Smallwood corner which left Rimmer helpless.

What happened next was quite curious as the Amateurs sat back and allowed the visitors to re-establish themselves. Edwin Hayter saw Vadge gather at his feet as he attempted to round the cat and Metelo got his diving header all wrong.

One man who doesn’t miss many openings, though, is van Diemen and he would, once again, prove the thorn in the side of the home side. A smart breakaway culminated with Juffing setting him through and, with great awareness, the forward lifted the ball over Vadge to put Totaal 2-1 up.

This stirred the Amateurs and they were unfortunate to see Tiarnach Casey hit the post and still might have grabbed a point late on but Andrew Potts could only direct a free-kick straight at Rimmer.

Meeblind was relieved at the final whistle that Putnam’s moment of madness hadn’t cost his side.

“I’m very pleased with the character the boys have shown after that dodgy period in the second-half,” he opened.

“However, I’m less pleased with Putnam and will be having words with him about what we expect from our players at this club.

“I wish Dan well for the remainder of the season. I’m confident he’ll get the side moving in the right direction fairly soon.”
