The final week will bring some intrigue to RM Invitational, but not as much many expected. Thundercats, three points ahead of Santos, need a mere point from Reggae Reggae Sauce to clinch the RM Invitational Crown. However, Santos have done everything in their power to try and keep the race as close as possible. The first task was going up against former RM champions Totaalvoetbal. In a very tight match at MVB Arena, both managers had played very smart tactics to keep the game even at halftime. Chances were few and far in between. Santos were able to eek out a 1-0 victory with a last gasp header from Richardo Ferrari. The next game at hand was facing the leaders at home. The Brasilians knew anything less than three points would guarantee success for Thundercats. It was at the second half that Santos threw their entire arsenal at the opposition, going for headers, throughballs, winning freekicks. Midfield dynamo Fredrick Winnerljung continued his prolific campaign with a goal in the 49th minute. Torbjörn Alshammar scored his league leading 14th goal of the season in typical fashion, blasting a swerving deadball past the outstretched arms of Carlos Magro to effectively win the game. The game was bittersweet though, as Asmar Golkás had to be taken off in the 89th minute due to a calf strain. The injury will sideline him for two weeks, effectively ruling him out for the season. It will be big blow to Santos chances, as well as a dire ending for the midfielder. Golkás provided much throughout the season, contributing with his vital playmaking ability. Santos wish him a speedy recovery.
Said the manager, “ We aren’t in the drivers seat in this race, and we hate to chase. Stranger things have happened in the last week, but we have to do our part first, that means getting a good game against Hun Haters. We will obviously miss the impact that Golkás would’ve had on the game, and we need our other players to step up in his absence.”
